Tips for Coaching Under-8 Soccer

A nurse practitioner by profession, Karlin Keelan Smith enjoys staying active in her free time. Karlin Keelan Smith is an avid runner and also coaches soccer to boys aged 5 to 7. The under-8 soccer coach must strike a balance between strengthening basic skills and introducing more complex concepts. First, players need to develop a basic foundation in the techniques of passing, shooting, receiving, and dribbling. Players should be able to execute an instep drive as well as three to four basic traps and one-on-one ball-handling skills. The under-8 player has often received a basic introduction to some of these skills in earlier years, although some may be learning such skills for the first time. For many, the key skill at this age is to be able to execute each move smoothly enough to look at the field, rather than the ball, while the player is in possession.
